A city built on coal

Wakefield was built on coal. Digging on the outskirts went back centuries, but the Industrial Revolution transformed it: by 1869 some forty-six pits had been sunk across the district, and the pit villages that grew around them became the shape of the modern city. Communities were laid out in long colliery terraces — Altofts' Silkstone Row, near the River Aire, was once the longest unbroken terrace of miners' houses in Europe. Those working communities needed hard-wearing, quick-to-lay surfaces for their roads, yards and drives, and tarmac fitted the bill. Even as the last of the Yorkshire collieries closed — by 1984 more than a quarter of those left in the county were in the Wakefield District — the tarmac they laid remained the everyday surface of the area's homes.

Why Wakefield tarmac goes grey

Fresh tarmac is a deep, rich black — but it does not stay that way for long on this side of the Pennines. Ultraviolet light gradually bleaches the bitumen that binds the surface, weathering it to a dull, porous grey. Wakefield's wet winters wash out the fine material and let moss and algae take hold in shaded spots and along kerbs; frost works into any cracks; and drips of oil and fuel leave the dark stains that no amount of ordinary washing will shift. Once the surface opens up it soaks in water and degrades faster — which is exactly why timely restoration costs far less than resurfacing.

Cleaned, recoloured, protected

Restoration brings tarmac back without the cost and upheaval of relaying it. We start with a thorough pressure clean to strip away moss, algae, dirt and loose grit and to lift oil staining from the surface. Where the colour has gone we apply a professional tarmac recolouring treatment — in classic black or red — that restores a deep, even finish. For driveways and commercial areas that take heavier use, an MMA coating adds a tough, fast-curing layer that holds its colour and resists wear. The result is a surface that looks new again and is sealed against the next Yorkshire winter.

Signs your tarmac needs restoring

The signals are easy to spot. The surface has faded from black to a tired, chalky grey. Green moss or algae is creeping in from the edges and shaded corners. Oil and fuel stains have built up where you park. Fine cracks or loose grit are starting to show. Or water sits on the surface and soaks in rather than running off. Each is a sign the binder is breaking down — and the sooner the drive is cleaned and recoloured, the longer the tarmac beneath will last.
